Liposuction and liposculpting for
fat removal
Liposuction
Liposuction
or liposculpting is a potentially extremely effective method of reducing
the layer of padding located beneath the skin of your stomach, neck, hips,
thighs, "grab handles," arms and back. Liposuction is not a good tool
for reducing excess skin, although the body usually responds to liposuction
with some degree of skin shrinkage. You can best judge the degree of
improvement that you can receive by pinching a double layer of your skin
between your thumb and index finger. Generally speaking, if that
thickness is about one inch in width you have a potentially small gain, two
to three inches a moderate gain, and over three inches of thickness a
significant potential improvement! The better one's skin
elasticity the smoother the result will be after liposuction. The
worse the skin's elasticity when undergoing liposuction, the more likely
that there will remain loose skin with the risk of irregularities, dimples
and rippling! Also, keep in mind that liposuction and liposculpture
are not treatments for cellulite.

Many patients ask if they
should lose weight prior to undergoing liposuction. My feeling is
that loss of excess weight is desirable if you can expect to keep it off
long term. If you've recently gained weight that you are certain
to lose, then why undergo surgery? If you think that you
should be thinner but are unlikely
to lose and maintain that lighter weight, then I feel that liposuction
can be very effective in reshaping and slimming selected areas without
the harm from harsh weight loss regimens followed by the regain of the
excess weight. I like to see my patients close to a practical and
maintainable weight before they undergo the procedure. The
difficulty lies in determining what that maintainable weight range for
each individual patient.

Interestingly, many patients have told me
that their body fat distribution has changed without any
significant weight gain when they come for liposuction consultation to
my Beverly Hills or Diamond Bar offices! This seems to be
hormonally related, and is often a good indication for liposuction
It has been my consistent finding that fat stored in the saddlebag and
tummy area in patients of normal weight is also hormonally related and
not likely to disappear without achieving an unmaintainable and
unhealthy low weight. Similarly, working out these areas at
a gym seldom succeeds in removing very much of these fatty prominences.
After liposuction,
most patients note some degree of swelling and mild bruising that disappears
gradually over the first six weeks to six months' time. We encourage
our patients who have undergone liposuction to wear compressive garments for
a six week period to encourage the resolution of swelling while also
encouraging whatever degree of skin tightening may potentially occur as a
result of the plastic surgical procedure. Keep in mind, that
liposuction is most beneficial in shaping and reducing the width of a
patient's silhouette, and not in tightening or smoothing the skin.
