Breast uplift surgery (also known as mastopexy) is a procedure which we offer to women whose breasts are drooping and poorly shaped.  It is frequently combined with the placement of a breast implant when enhancement, filling or greater firmness of your breasts is desirable.   Not only can the placement of a breast implant be expected to add to the fullness of your breasts, but it usually contributes to making the result of the uplift procedure better looking and longer lasting.  Women who have naturally oversized breasts do not require implants, and usually undergo breast reduction surgery (see below).  Breast uplift surgery (mastopexy) and breast reduction surgery both require that surgical incisions be make around your nipple and possibly also on the lower aspect of your breasts (depending upon the degree of skin and breast tissue removal that is necessary).

Breast reduction surgery is offered to women who are unhappy about the excessive size and pendulousness of their breasts.  These women   often suffered from neck, shoulder and back pain as well as embarrassment over the size of their breasts since adolescence.  This procedure permits removal of both excessive breast tissue and skin, while accomplishing a reduction in the weight and size of your breasts.   Since the goal is to make your breasts smaller, implants are unecessary.    Many women undergoing breast reduction go on to lose significant weight by increasing their exercise and activity levels after the surgery.  Most tell us that they wish that they had undergone the procedure years earlier, thanks to the alleviation of pain that they achieve!  A question that is frequently asked is whether the nipple must be "lifted" off of the breast during surgery, and this is almost never the case (with rare exception).

Any breast surgery can affect breast feeding (though it usually does not) as well as sensation in the nipple and breast areas.  Most patients experience a return of sensation to levels nearly equal to that present prior to their surgery, although there are some exceptions with either reduced or heightened nipple sensation.   When you come to the office for a consultation, we can discuss this with you at greater length.
